Ireland’s State Apologies to Date - Ireland slowly coming to terms with its dark past
1. Apology for the Magdalen Laundries (2013)

Context: This apology was issued to the women who were confined and worked in the Magdalen Laundries, often under harsh conditions, from 1922 to 1996. Following a report by Senator Martin McAleese, Enda Kenny formally apologized on behalf of the State for the suffering caused and the failures of the State in protecting these women.
2. Apology to Survivors of Industrial Schools and Reformatories (2009)
Date: May 2009 (initial acknowledgment following the Ryan Report, and formal apologies given in Dáil speeches)

Context: The 2009 Ryan Report, following years of investigation, documented systemic abuse in industrial schools and reformatories run by religious orders. An apology was first issued by the State in 1999 by then-Taoiseach Bertie Ahern, and reiterated by Brian Cowen in 2009, acknowledging the immense suffering of survivors of these institutions.
3. Apology for Mother and Baby Homes (2021)

Context: This apology followed the publication of the Mother and Baby Homes Commission of Investigation Report, which highlighted systemic abuse, neglect, and poor treatment of unmarried mothers and their children in these homes. Micheál Martin formally apologized on behalf of the State to survivors, acknowledging societal and state complicity in their suffering.
4. Apology for Forced Adoption Practices (2021)
Context: While not a standalone formal apology given in a separate session, the issue of forced adoptions and illegal birth registrations was acknowledged in connection with the Mother and Baby Homes Report, and commitments were made to address the wrongs and provide redress for those affected.
5. Apology for Abuse in Residential Institutions (Redress Act, 2002)
Context: Following revelations of widespread physical, sexual, and emotional abuse in residential institutions run by religious organizations and funded or supervised by the State, the government issued an apology and established the Residential Institutions Redress Board to provide compensation.
6. Apology for Contamination of Blood Products (1990s)
Context: The government issued a formal apology to the women infected with Hepatitis C through contaminated blood products supplied by the Blood Transfusion Service Board. A compensation scheme and tribunal were established for the victims.
7. Apology for the Discrimination and Criminalization of LGBTQ+ People (2018)
Date: June 19, 2018

Context: This apology was made to individuals convicted under historical laws that criminalized homosexual acts in Ireland. The apology recognized the stigma and suffering caused by the criminalization and was part of a broader acknowledgment of past injustices against the LGBTQ+ community.
